Divided We Fall

In this graphic from Pew Research, we succinctly see what's driving many of our national problems.

Political polarization in the American public
When you have this kind of polarity, you're going to have less discourse and less desire for compromise.  This is a situation that is eating away at us as a nation.  We have to do something different. For my part, next month I will be speaking to a group of St. Louis conservatives. It happens that on the issue of Cuba our thoughts align.  But I hope we'll have the opportunity for a broader discussion. It's unlikely that we will convince each other of the correctness of our respective positions, but that's fine.  Each of us needs to commit to stepping outside our echo chambers and actually talk with people we disagree with.  The point is to demonstrate respect for each other as fellow Americans and to build on that respect for making the compromises that will without doubt be required of us in the future if the U.S. is to remain a strong nation.
